It’s a small world…

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” Dr. Seuss

Dr. Seuss was a wise man. I love to read, and on a broad range of subjects bringing the world just a little bit closer. I just finished reading Abundance: the Future is Better Than You Think by authors Peter H. Diamandis and Steven Kotler.  While Abundance focuses on important global issues (feeding the planet, clean water, energy, healthcare, and education to name a few), it does so from a positive perspective, offering research based facts which support being optimistic about the future. For anyone who cares about people and the planet, enjoys their life, has a passion for technology, and or has children or grandchildren, this book is for you.

After watching a 16 minute video clip that I saw on a friend’s facebook page of Peter Diamandis: Abundance is our future, I was quite excited. As a solution focused coach, it was so refreshing to learn how far we have come in terms of making progress on these important global issues. It’s the glass half full as opposed to half empty approach. From this brief video clip, I was also reminded of a favourite book we read in school for a sustainability course, Capitalism at the Crossroads by Stuart Hart. As it turned out, Stu Hart’s book is referenced in Abundance. Yes, it’s a small world and getting smaller with connections at every turn. Being personally motivated and inspired by meaningful work, doing work that matters runs deep within. I was curious to learn more and learn I did.

When I shared the Abundance is our future video, Lisa Larter, CEO of The Social Business Academy, commented that the book was fantastic which piqued my curiosity even further. Within a few hours, I had downloaded the book to my iPAD using the kobo e-reader. True confessions here. This was a first for me, and another reason for the title of this post. I’ve read countless academic journal articles lately and several short e-books online but up until that time, call me old fashioned but I had no interest in reading a book without a spine. Holding a book in my hands is like peanut butter to jelly. It’s quite ironic that Abundance was the first one I downloaded because Abundance speaks to the ability of technology to make the world a smaller place where accessibility creates opportunity for abundance. It was simply amazing to read about how the world has changed for the better with advances in technology. Specifically, how social entrepreneurs are popping up in remote parts of Africa with the invention of the smart phone. Furthermore, how the world will only continue to change for the better with inventions in healthcare for example “Lab-on-a-Chip” with a goal of zero-cost diagnostics, and advances in education with successful global initiatives such as “One Laptop Per Child”. These are not pie in the sky ideas. These are real and they are happening all around us.

Interestingly, I made many connections to coaching while reading this book. Primarily because when we focus on innovative and creative solutions, we are able to engage the cerebral cortex brain system which has the capacity for future visioning. This is very important and powerful when comparing it to “getting stuck” in the problems.  Often times these situations are fear-based, and engage the reptilian brain system based on fight or flight responses, and in the case of the emotional brain, clinging to sameness also known as our comfort zone. As Abundance points out, fear can be a very powerful motivator creating extraordinary risk taking. From a coaching perspective however, fear can also be completely paralyzing causing feelings of anxiety and thoughts of “I can’t” rather than “I can.” When we combine the learning from a book such as Abundance and engage the whole brain system however, our capacity for creating abundance on a global level is only magnified. Finally, we can see the forest through the trees. The best part? We all have this potential!

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”  ~ Margaret Mead

Times have changed and the world is getting smaller. We have the ability to create change on the other side of the world without even leaving our living room. Global news travels across social media platforms in the blink of an eye. From individuals to organizations, people are doing some pretty amazing things to create change.

Are you curious? Want to make a difference? Watch the video, read the book, learn how to engage your whole brain system, and look for ways to do your part in making the world an even better place. Please, by all means, share your ideas here. I would love to hear them.

Best wishes for engaging your creative genius. Glo

“Back to school” has new meaning…

The term back to school has different meanings for a few of my family members this year.  My niece Jenna (left) is a second year student at The University of Western Ontario commonly known as Western. (Can you tell I just copied the uni name directly from her facebook profile?) Jenna is doing a B.Sc. honours with a specialization in biology also known as she is a science brainiac. I will never forget how excited she was in high school to report dissecting some strange rodent. Gross! What is new for Jenna this year is that she is no longer in residence making university life a completely different experience for her. She is sharing a house with 4 other girls and lovin’ it. Now don’t get me wrong.  Jenna isn’t exactly “slumming” it in London! She and her roomies have created a pretty cool haven for living the good life with a little bit of room for studying. Jenna has been a continuous source of encouragement and inspiration for me during my academic journey. When I was taking Research Methods (insert I failed Grade 9 math), it was Jenna that I reached out to for support.

Next up is my niece Katie (right). Katie is a 30 something first year film loving student at York University in Toronto. She is enrolled in the four year honours program for film studies which also means she watches all of those movies that the general population has never heard of! This has been a big year of change for Katie and the changes aren’t finished. She went to New York and to Europe for the first time, moved in with her boyfriend and most recently gave up her job as an admin to go back to school and pursue her love of film. I secretly wonder if this photo of her looking up at the statue of Napolean in sheer awe is simply a precursor to her new journey with university life!  She too, has been an amazing sense of encouragement and support.  In fact, I believe Katie was the first one to say “you should do a PhD!”

Soooo…speaking of PhD…this is something that is on my mind these days. I must admit that it comes and goes though. Presently I’m doing a research paper towards completion of an M.A. Leadership degree at the University of Guelph. Yup! Even though I was scared to death and I REALLY was, I went back to school in my mid 40′s to pursue a university degree and to enhance my learning as an executive coach. I have never looked back. It has been a very challenging yet rewarding experience.

Back to the flip flop…Because I am so passionate about my research topic (using executive coaching to increase employee engagement), there are days and fleeting moments when I don’t want it to end. I want to be able to take my topic and the “coaching for engagement” model that I have developed and take it to the next level. But hello! We’re talking about four years here and there are SO many things to consider! Fortunately for me, my amazing husband Marc, is 100% behind me.

While I am contemplating this massive decision and researching what it “truly” means, I also have a new view of back to school. I am a Teaching Assistant to the new cohort in my program for Leadership of Organizational Change. Teaching and the education system seem to run through the veins in my family.  My Mom was our elementary school secretary.  My Dad completed his university degree while working full-time in the military. My sister Anne, is a teacher who completed her teaching degree with two young children in tow.  My sister Deborah, is a teacher who has just experienced her last back to school and is retiring in June 2012 to pursue her love of travel and LEGO (not necessarily in that order!).  And my sister Linda is pursuing her Chefs diploma while juggling a very busy career and family life.

Along with my sincere love for coaching and genuine desire to see people do what they love, I would be honoured to teach someday and to live a life of continuous learning. I have no idea if I will go further in my studies or if there is a doctor in this house but I do know this. If you have ever thought you might like to go back to school or try anything new for that matter, but were scared for fear of failure. You CAN do it!

If you think your life can’t change in the blink of an eye…think again. We, as humans, are powerful creatures filled with potential and possibilities. We just need to believe it!

Cheers to you and your journey whatever that means to you.

On a Mission…Look out World

One of the things that I used to do regularly and I’ve made a commitment to starting again is yoga and meditation.  I love the way I feel when I’m doing yoga and the greater level of flexibility I experience in general once I’m into a regular routine.  The state of mindfulness that meditation brings, stays with me long afterward as well, helping to reduce stress and making it easier to be fully present.  As for this picture on the beach, I could certainly handle some of that as well!  Maybe that is up next…

Remember those things that used to bring you such joy?  Perhaps it is a sport, a hobby or maybe it’s learning a new language or cooking better meals.  Perhaps it is looking for that new passion, something that you want to do and that is just for you and your pure pleasure.  Whatever it is, make the time.  You owe it to yourself and others to carve out that little piece of time that’s just for you.  If it seems too much, chunk it down but don’t chunk it out of your life.  Create a workable plan that includes “you” time.

When those things that you derive so much pleasure from seem to fall off your radar, it makes you wonder why.  How could something that makes you feel so good in the moment and long after, get left behind?  Fairly simple I guess.  Other things take priority…some are within our control and others are not.  There are so many demands on our time and energy that somedays it seems difficult to imagine cramming anything else into the schedule.  But as the saying goes if there is a will, there is a way!  My 2011 mission is to believe and to pave the way!

An interesting exercise is to write down how you spend your time throughout an entire day for a full week and then have a look.  If you are truly honest with yourself, you may find that there are pockets of time which could be better spent on doing something you derive pleasure from.  Everything and everyone around you benefits when you’re making time for yourself and the things you love to do.

Want to join me on my mission?  I’m starting today so look out world…Namaste

Cheers,  Glo

Selling Yourself Short?

Do you get caught up in the game of limiting yourself and your abilities?  I use the term game knowing fully that it’s not a game I want to play any longer.  I think it’s too easy for us to pigeon-hole ourselves when really, we have so much potential.  We use those nasty words I can’t when really we can.  We often sabotage ourselves before even getting to the starting line.  It’s like it doesn’t really matter what the goal or the limitations are, we just knock ourselves down and out.  What’s up with that?

Last night I watched an inspiring video on UTube that one of my sisters shared. It was 80 year old Janey Cutler singing on Britain’s Got Talent.  Ironically Janey chose to sing Edith Piaff’s “No Regrets”.  I wonder if Janey ever sabotaged her efforts.  I wonder what the catalyst was to getting her up there on stage when she indicates that she’s been singing in pubs and clubs.  Did she start believing in herself?  A friend told her “better late than never” and she says very matter of factly “I like singing and my friends said go for it”.  As I watched this video I could feel her heart filling with joy not just because of the thousands of people giving her a standing ovation but because she was doing it.  You see it, you feel it and you hear it.  Janey Cutler was up there doing what she loves!

If Janey can make it on Britian’s Got Talent at 80 and my Mom can start using facebook and a blackberry at 79, doesn’t that say something to you?  Don’t let anything or anyone stop you from learning and doing new things.  Address any fears, take that plunge,  get out there and do those things that used to scare you.

Don’t sell yourself short!  Sell yourself tall!  Heck, make it a grande!  Really go for it, you are so worth it!

Let’s work together to change limitations into possibilities and fear into hope…if Janey did it, so can you!

I invite you to turn up those speakers and sit back to enjoy Janey Cutler http://bit.ly/dsRdyq

The Best Gifts to Give Part 2…Believe in Others

This is Part 2 of a 2 Part blog: Believe in Yourself and Believe in Others

April 16th marked the 2nd year of celebrating World Entrepreneurship Day.  According to the worldeshipday website this is “a 24 hour global initiative dedicated to spurring economic growth and creativity”.   This organization known on twitter as @WorldEshipDay tweeted on April 16th inviting people all over the world to do something to support an Entrepreneur they know.  On April 20th they tweeted again inviting people who participated in supporting an Entrepreneur on April 16th to submit their stories.  As an Entrepreneur and Professional Coach, I am a big believer in supporting and promoting others of all ages as they realize their dreams and full potential.

I didn’t need to think very long about who I was going to support or how.  I have met with and spoken to many young Entrepreneurs recently however, I was very impressed with a unique idea that Jen Butson of Ottawa, Canada  came up with.  Jen is a very bright Entrepreneur and 3rd year BCom student at the Telfer School of Management.  As Founder of Jennifer Lee Promotions, a company specializing in custom promotional goods, Jen may be young but she knows exactly what she wants.  She wants to own her own car by Canada Day.  Canada Day is July 1st for those of you reading this post that are not Canadian.  Jen has created a hashtag on twitter so that every time she tweets about this goal it is saved under #CarBeforeCanadaDay.  In addition, Jen created a boot strap marketing campaign offering “investors” advertising on her vehicle in exchange for a monthly fee which would be used as part of her car payment.  I roared with laughter when I first saw this post come across on twitter but after further consideration I realized it was just plain brilliant!  A few weeks went by but when I read the post from World Entrepreneurship Day about supporting an Entrepreneur I knew that was it!  She had me.  I was hooked.  On April 16th I let Jen know that I would “sponsor” her Car Before Canada Day campaign by advertising on her back window for a mere $20 a month.

Jen is no fool.  She has since written a blog post directed at Ford Motor Company and even received a personal call from Mr. Alan Mulally, CEO of Ford Motor Company in the US acknowledging it.  Like most Entrepreneurs, Jen is focused on her vision and she has no shortage of ideas to help her get there.  If you want to learn more about Jen’s brilliant Car Before Canada Day campaign please see the attached document or read her blog post  “A love letter to Ford”.  With a spirit like this, Jen is sure to soar!

The Best Gifts You Can Give…Believe in Yourself and in Others

This is Part 1 of a 2 part blog Believe in Yourself and Believe in Others

Do you believe in yourself?  Do you understand the true value in doing so?  Do you know that you will accomplish so much more if you believe that you will?

Do you ever want to do something and then you have these annoying inner gremlins that are chattering away?  They are feeding you negative messages about all the things you can’t do and why you can’t do them.  This negativity may be ingrained based on years of conditioning but it’s important to recognize that where you focus your attention is what you will get more of.  If you say you can’t do something, you almost certainly won’t.  If you say that you can and if you truly believe that you can do something, you almost certainly will find the way.

The process of getting from saying it to believing it isn’t exactly rocket science but there is a definite distinction between the two.  Saying it out loud, shouting it out from the roof top to the Universe (or whoever else wants to listen at this point) is a good start.  By saying something, by putting it out there, that is where you will start to focus your attention.  You will start to believe it because this is the message you are hearing.  Believing in yourself, fully and completely, beats those nasty gremlins anytime!

Think of a particular goal you want to achieve.  Is it realistic?  Is it within your span of control?  Does it align with your core values?  Is it sustainable over time?  What are the factors that affect whether you will or won’t go for it?  What messages are you feeding yourself at this very minute?  Are the gremlins having a sing song or are you already all fired up and ready to roll?  Where are you?  Who are you?

One of the best gifts that you can give and receive is to believe in yourself.  There is no shame in this.  It doesn’t mean that you’re arrogant.  It simply means that you’re accepting what is possible.  Most importantly, it sets you free and allows you to soar to your greatest heights.  It is completely inspiring and empowering.

Need a Coach to help you with this?  I invite you to come and fly with me!

Cheers,

Inspiring Coaching

As the Olympic games came to a close tonight with Canada winning the Gold for Men’s hockey, it would have been impossible to contain the enthusiam generated by this outstanding win.  From the roaring crowd in the stands to the jam packed city streets and bars to the many phone calls, emails sent and received, it was a big night for Canadians.  The team played with their heart on their sleeves during most of the game and in the end they came through with glowing hearts.   We saw inspiring coaching from Mike Babcock “Being frustrated is just an absolute waste of time. It’s about being positive, digging in and staying within the structure. It’s all part of life.” When effective coaching is paired with focused, determined and committed athletes the results are extraordinary.

I have always been proud to be a Canadian however tonight it goes beyond pride. It is that deep belief that as a nation inspired by what is possible, we can do absolutely anything including getting 14 Gold Medals beating all previous records.  Go Canada Go!

How did you feel when Crosby got that 3rd and final goal?  What was your very first thought?

Cheers,

Glo
